2021 COURSE DESCRIPTION

Addressing racial equity and implicit bias is now a top national priority. The United States has a long-standing history of health disparities, many of which are expensive, avoidable and preventable. African American women and babies have experienced these health disparities at alarming rates. African American families are also disproportionately impacted by higher rates of infant and maternal morbidity, mortality and premature birth rates. According to the 2019 March of Dimes Report Card, the United States premature birth rate is 10%, and this rate increased four years consecutively. In addition, the preterm birth rate in African American women is reported 49% higher than all other women.  Research studies also suggest that African American women and babies in healthcare settings (including the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) experience higher rates of implicit bias from the clinical care team if they are not culturally congruent. Closing these health and racial gaps in healthcare and in the NICU requires implicit bias training as a first step to transform organizational culture and improve quality of care delivered to African American babies.

This virtual training program addresses the most recent disparities data, federal and state mandates, and the African American NICU parent outcry for bias-free and culturally respectful care in the perinatal and neonatal settings.

Once Upon A Preemie in joint partnership with the Perinatal Advisory Council: Leadership, Advocacy and Consultation (PAC/LAC), this accredited program covers four one-hour modules including:

• An Intro to Health and Racial Equity and Implicit Bias

• Solutions for Addressing Inequities and Implicit Bias Pre, During, and Post NICU

• Black NICU Mother’s Mental and Emotional Health Pre, During, and Post NICU

• Black Preemie Parents as Partners in Preemie Care

Filled with disparities data, clinician experiences, and real patient stories, this interactive course will offer live Q & A, actionable tools and resources, and a post-training evaluation.

Learning Objectives:

• Describe current and historical health disparities data trends, and maternal health outcomes

• Explain the role of root causes, structural racism, bias, and racial injustice in the delivery of perinatal and neonatal care for Black families

• Address mental and emotional issues impacting Black NICU Mothers

• Deliver practical solutions and tools for delivering bias free perinatal and neonatal care to Black NICU and Preemie families

• Share real patient experiences and stories in perinatal and neonatal care to inform the delivery of high quality, culturally respectful care, and bias free neonatal care.
